Life as seen through my lens…

What the f*ck?

I’ve been missing in action from here for a while… real life (a summer of volunteering, work, family, and a failing attempt to try and get some work/life balance) has resulted in me having no time (or inclination) to post stuff here… so it’s time to break my silence with a little rant!

I had promised myself to not make any kind of political statement out on the internet, but as the latest round of pre-election party campaigning has just landed directly in my inbox, I think it’s time to say something.

I guess the Republican Party is either desperate, worried, running short on money, or all of the above and more…. I just received an e-mail spam message from them asking me to rally behind the Republican Team and donate money to them.

In the message they say “This is a time for us to come together as a nation, and move past the divisiveness and bitterness we’ve seen over the last four years.” My response to that is… WHO THE F*CK WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THAT DIVISIVENESS AND BITTERNESS? It sure wasn’t the Democrats? The Republican Party stood in the way of pretty much EVERYTHING that Obama has tried to do over the past 4 years despite attempts to reach compromise. It’s no wonder we are where we are, because the Republican Party has basically allowed the country to get into this mess by blocking everything that would have helped get it out of that mess, on the grounds of holding a party line regardless of the consequences, as opposed to doing what might actually help this country.

I can’t vote in this election, because this country, rightly or wrongly, only allows citizens (as opposed to legal permanent residents) to vote, but if I could I certainly wouldn’t be voting Republican, and I’m sure as heck not donating $50 to your fund! You have more than enough money anyway!

Feel free to comment or not as you see fit – I’m not going to respond to anything whether I agree with it or not! This is me having a little rant – I’m not looking for debate!

A day in the life…

A day in the life…, originally uploaded by Images by John ‘K’.

As a child brought up on a diet of 1970’s British TV, I have fond memories of Johnny Morris and in particular his show Animal Magic. In the show he would introduce viewers to animals around the world and would often give the animals human characteristics as he interacted with them.

His love of nature the wild and the desire to have his viewers relate to the wonderful creatures he had them mirror human situations often resulted in some of the best comedy on children’s TV and was compelling viewing for young and old.

As my love for photographing wildlife grew, I found myself adding captions to many of my photos in a way that was clearly inspired by my childhood love of Johnny Morris and Animal Magic, as can be seen here, with a series of photos capturing the interaction between a young Bald Eagle hatched this year and its mother (as watched from 900 feet away)!

May The Fourth Be With You, Always

35 years ago today I was in my first year of teenage life, and having been brought up on a diet of Doctor Who (yes, it’s been going that long), Star Trek (original series), and stories by Issac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke, I watched with interest as news of a new epic science fiction movie, soon to be released, made its way over the Atlantic Ocean to the UK. I quickly latched onto the seemingly simple yet compelling story of “farm hand discovers his inner strength and saves the galaxy” and went out and got the comic books of the story, the photo novel, all the “special behind the scenes” magazines about the film and even without seeing the film became a huge fan.

Move forward a few months to September of 1977 and my mother and I traveled to the west coast of America for a three week coach tour of the western states, taking in many sights that went on to shape my desire to live here as an adult. During that trip I was to turn 14, and on the day of my 14th birthday we had a “free day” in San Francisco with no scheduled activities, so my mum asked me what I wanted to do. My first thought was to see if Star Wars was still playing anywhere, as it had yet to open in the UK (that wouldn’t come until later – this was in the days before digital projection and world-wide simultaneous releases). Sure enough it was still showing at the Coronet Theater (where it had opened in San Francisco back on May 25th) so I almost begged her to let me go see it.

I got my birthday wish, so we walked down Geary Boulevard from our hotel to where the theater stood (it’s not there any more), got tickets for the next showing, and we had some lunch while I eagerly waited to see “THE movie”. As we drew close to the show time, I couldn’t get back to the Coronet quick enough. I handed over “the ticket” at the kiosk and rushed in to pick a seat. Now keep in mind that by now the movie had been showing for 4 months, so the theater that could seat almost 1,500 people was pretty much empty – there were three other people in the place to share this experience with me!

So I took position in what I thought to be the best seat, towards the front and in the center of the row so the screen filled my field of view, and waited for the show to start while my mum went off to kill a couple of hours (as she didn’t want to watch the film – it wasn’t ‘her thing’!).

Image

The lights dimmed, the curtains opened, the screen burst into life, and that now instantly recognizable music started booming through the many speakers. The preface to the story scrolled across the screen, faded to a spectacular view of stars that panned to pick up a beautiful alien planet, and then WOOSH – sounding like they were flying over the tops of our heads the space ships almost had us ducking in our seats. I was immediately sucked into the story, and sat riveted for the next two hours, not wanting to move as the final notes of the closing music faded to silence.

Thus began my love for the Star Wars story, which may have faded a little over the years (helped in no small part by the appearance of Jar Jar Binks in Episode 1) but has never gone away.

So, on the day that has become known internationally as “Star Wars Day” through a fun play on words, may the Force be with you, always!

Going big…

I’ve had sporadic success selling a set of 8 by 10 prints at a local gallery, but recently the owner asked me for a number of larger prints to put on display. Now it’s one thing selecting a bunch of favorite shots to print as 8 by 10 prints, but it’s a whole other ballgame when you start working at 20 by 30! Many of my favorites were from my earlier days of shooting DSLR, and while they looked fine as 8 by 10 prints, the looked ghastly from a quality perspective at 20 by 30. While my early composition was just fine, the technical aspect of my photography wasn’t where it needed to be to support a 20 by 30 print!

The other aspect of this is cost – getting 8 by 10 prints done, even on good quality paper, is relatively cheap, and even with mats and sleeves the finished article is relatively inexpensive. When you start printing at 20 by 30 on good quality poster-board the cost goes up significantly, and so you really need to make sure your choices are going to work well.

With all of this in mind, I chose 3 pictures that I liked and that fitted the guidelines I was given by the studio for the subject matter they were looking for, and got them printed. As with anything you do for the first time, there is always an opportunity to learn and do better, and sure enough, one of the three images looked lousy once printed that large, even though I thought I’d done all the right things to make sure it’d come out looking OK.

Another of the three looked OK, but could have been better and needed a little tweaking to make it really stand out as something special. Thankfully I was more than happy with the third.

So I picked another image to replace the one that was a failure, tweaked and re-printed the second, and now the three 20 by 30 prints are going into the gallery tomorrow to ‘test the waters’.

These are the images I ended up going with…
